»  The Inception

The Inception

It was acknowledged even as far back as the late 19th century, that success of steel making depended upon the availability of assured supply of quality raw materials. In order to achieve this objective, steps were taken to develop competencies in the areas of systematic mineral exploration, mineral excavation, processing and mine planning. The Natural Resources Division of the Company (earlier called the Geological Cell) played a pioneering role in carrying out exploration for Iron ore, Coal, Manganese Ore, Dolomite and other essential Raw materials for Steel making. The Raw Materials Division (RMD) was instrumental in developing world class mining facilities for Coal ( West Bokaro and Jamadoba) and Iron & Manganese Ores (Noamundi/ Joda). It was this exploratory zeal of TSL, which led to the discovery of the first chromite deposit in India in the Sukinda valley of Orissa, way back in 1949, when the world was still to fully appreciate the value of chrome in the production of Stainless Steel. It was also around this time that the Ferro Alloys Plant at Joda was established (1957) making it one of the oldest plants in India.

FAMD

In order to create focus on the Chrome and Manganese business of TSL, Ferro Alloy and Minerals Division was created as a Strategic Business Unit of TSL. At present, TSL-FAMD operates the largest chromite mine in India and has the largest reserves of high grade Mn. Ore in India. It has a state of the art chrome beneficiation plant, Ferro alloy plants in Bamnipal, Joda and Cuttack(as a wholely owned subsidiary, TS Alloys) besides rendering marketing services for Tata Steel Kwa Zulu Natal Pty Ltd (TSKZN – a Subsidiary of TSL in Richards Bay, South Africa). In essence, the division is in the forefront of the Tata Steel Group’s foray into the global ferro alloys and minerals business, leveraging upon its status as the only Indian Ferro Alloy player to build long term relationship with the most reputed Steel Companies in the world like Nippon Steel, Hitachi, JFE, SMI, POSCO, etc.

The Manganese business of FAMD, Tata Steel provides the opportunity to cater and grow with the growing in house requirements of the TSL Group and reputed Steel companies in India and Internationally. While 100 % of Jamshedpur Works requirement of bulk Manganese Ferro Alloys is met by FAMD, efforts are on to meet the entire requirement of the Tata Steel Group companies by expanding scope of supplies to all overseas operating units like Natsteel Asia, Tata Steel Thailand and Corus. Over the last 5 years, TSL with its unique advantage of being the lowest cost Mn. Alloy producer in India, has attained the status of the largest producer of Manganese alloys in India

FAMD also has a significant presence in the dolomite market in India and caters to a wide variety of customers - Integrated Steel Plants, Sponge Iron plants and Cement plants located in Eastern India. Currently, due to capacity restrictions, most of the Pyroxenite produced is being consumed internally.
