Overview

Having discovered Chrome in 1949 in India, Tata Steel is today one of the top six manufacturers of Chrome Alloys in the World and the leading Chrome alloy producer in India.

Tata Steel’s Ferro Alloy Plants in India are located at Bamnipal, in the Keonjhar district of Orissa, and at Cuttack, in Orissa and at Richards Bay in South Africa. The Plant at Cuttack has two 16.5 MVA semi-closed furnaces and the plant at Richards Bay has two 38 MVA semi-closed furnaces.

In addition Tata Steel has a Ferro Alloy Plant at Joda, currently making Manganese Alloys. The Bamnipal plant is equipped with a 30 MVA closed submerged arc furnace which has been installed with technical collaboration from Voest Alpine and Outokumpu. The Ferro Chrome Plant at Bamnipal produces 50,000 tpa Ferro Chrome from the Chrome Ore mined at Sukinda.  The plants are ISO: 9001(2004 version), ISO: 14000 certified and SA 8000 certified.

Ferro Alloy Plant at Cuttack in Orissa, India currently making Manganese and Chrome Alloys (50,000 tpa, 2 x 16.5 MVA semi closed furnaces) 300 km from nearest port, , located at railhead with provision for both full rake and CONCOR (containerised) rake loads and road (truck) transport. 

Ferro Alloy Plant at Bamnipal in Orissa, India currently making High Carbon Ferro Chrome 50,000 tpa, 1 x 33.5 MVA fully closed furnace) 200 km from nearest port, , located near railhead with provision for both full rake and CONCOR (containerised) rake loads and road (truck) transport.

Ferro Alloy Plant at Richards Bay in South Africa currently making Charge Chrome (in 2 x 38 MVA closed furnace) 200 km from nearest port, located near railhead with provision for road (truck) transport. The two furnaces are expected to produce about 130,000 to 150,000 tonnes per annum of high quality charge chrome. TSKZN plans to add two more furnaces in phase two, which will double the production capacity.
