With a significant percentage of the Indian population comprising illiterate adults, Tata Steel’s primary objective is to ensure the spread of literacy across its areas of operation.

Tata Steel, through its various Adult Literacy Programmes endeavours to empower communities for a brighter future. Some of the key objectives of Tata Steel’s Adult Literacy Programmes are:


  • To ensure basic reading and writing skills
  • Improve general awareness
  • Enhance employability
  • Create self-dependency


In 2013-2014, nearly 17,000 rural women have been made functionally literate.
